The main focus for each program at Varsity Hockey is skill Development. Developing skills correctly with speed, precision, strength, balance, and athleticism is our ultimate goal. Each program is developed and created in a way that will produce excellent habits. For our skills sessions we want to create excellent practice habits that can be carried over into competition. This doesn’t mean players will not fail, as a matter of fact players and parents should expect to fail, but they will learn from their failures. This statement is important for skill development. Failing is okay, and actually is encouraged when it comes to developing skills. When we fail we need to correct our technique and try again. Some times we need to slow the skill down to complete it correctly, and once we successfully produce the intended task, we will increase the speed and difficulty, then we will repeat over and over again.
Once we have completed it correctly thousands and thousands of times, we will create a habit or a subconscious muscle memory. As we progress we will expect players to complete more and more skills with ‘no time, and no space.’

*10,000 hours of ten years of practice seem to be necessary to reach an elite level.
*Practice develops an activity-specific knowledge base that leads to activity-specific performance improvements.
*Child prodigies, such as Mozart and Tiger Woods actually back up this theory. They just started intensive practice much earlier than everyone else.
*Practice must be purposeful, otherwise it is useless. It must ‘overload’ the current systems in order to cause improvements.
*Feedback is necessary for improvement. It helps us correct and fine tune.
*Sometimes it can be a particular event or conversation that sparks the belief and desire to excel.
*A long-term, growth mindset is vital to creating an environment where players can thrive and stay driven.
